How many Discord servers can you join? 100 on a free account, and 200 if you pay for Nitro. Nitro Basic, the cheaper plan, does not move the number at all: it stays at 100. That detail is where most articles on this topic go wrong, because they assume any paid tier doubles the cap.

How many Discord servers can you join on each kind of account

The figures come from Discord's support page on joining servers. Only the full Nitro plan gets you to 200.

The mix-up is easy to understand. Basic sounds like a smaller Nitro with the same perks in a cheaper box, and plenty of writers filled in the missing detail with a guess. The extra server slots belong to the bigger plan alone. Free and Basic sit on the same line, and both are at 100.

Discord has reshuffled its Nitro tiers before. If the plan names on your screen look different from the ones above, trust the support page over any blog post, including this one.

What counts toward the limit

Every server you are in counts, and that includes the ones you created yourself. A server you own takes up a slot exactly like one you joined through an invite.

The cap is about you, not about the servers. It says nothing regarding how many people a single server can hold. It limits how many servers one account can belong to.

Limits like this are one of several quirks in how group links work on each app, and Discord's is unusual because it counts memberships per person.

What happens when you reach the wall

Accept Invite stops working. Discord tells you that you have reached the maximum number of servers, and the invite sits there until you free a slot.

If you run a server, expect the odd member who cannot get in. Nothing is wrong with your invite. That person has simply hit their own cap, and a message asking them to leave a stale server is often the whole fix.

Few people hit this overnight. It builds slowly. A game launches, you join its server, the game fades out of your week, and the server stays. Giveaway servers, a friend's side project and a bot's support server pile up the same way, until one day a link you actually want refuses to open.

Clearing space without losing anything useful

Leaving is easy. On mobile, long-press the server icon and choose Leave Server. On a computer, right-click the icon and pick the same option.

If you own the server, Discord will not let you simply walk out. Hand ownership to someone you trust, or delete the server if it is finished.

Deciding what to cut is the slow part. Scroll your list from the bottom and ask of each server whether you would notice if it vanished. Anything you have not opened since the last season of a game, anything you joined for a single giveaway, anything where you only ever see the same bot post: those go first.

Before you leave something you might miss, try muting it. A muted server stays in your list, stops buzzing your phone, and still counts toward the cap, so muting is for noise and not for making room. Folders are in the same boat: they tidy the column of icons but do not remove a server from your count.

Leaving is also not always final. A valid invite lets you back in, though a link that has expired or been revoked means asking for a new one, and a server that banned you will not take you back. Our walkthrough on joining a server from an invite link covers the return trip.

Whether Nitro is worth it for the server count alone

Usually not. Most people who sit near the cap are carrying dozens of servers they never open, and a ruthless clean-up costs nothing.

It starts to make sense if you moderate several communities, run a creator's presence across many servers, or follow a lot of games and hobbies that each live in their own place. In that case 200 is real breathing room. Nitro also bundles other perks, so judge it on those too, not only on the slot count.

If your real problem is finding servers worth the slots, finding Discord servers by game or hobby helps you keep fewer and better ones.

How the other apps handle limits

Telegram and WhatsApp put their limits on the group, not the person. A Telegram supergroup tops out at 200,000 members according to the Telegram FAQ, and a WhatsApp group at 1,024 including admins.

Those numbers matter if you are choosing where to host a community rather than which to join. Our side-by-side of the three apps goes through that choice.

Making room for new servers

Open your server list, mute or leave anything you have not read in months, and then go back to the Discord server directory for something that fits what you do now.
