A fake WhatsApp group link rarely looks fake. The web address is a near-copy of WhatsApp's, or the group behind a perfectly real link is built to take money or documents from whoever joins. The nine signs below run from things you can check in a few seconds to things that only show once you are inside.
How a fake WhatsApp group link gets past you
Nobody reads the address of a link that arrives in a forward. You see a group name, a promise, and a green button, and you tap. That habit is what scam links depend on, and it is the same habit that makes honest links spread so fast, which is why a wider picture of how group links work and travel helps before you start judging individual ones.
A genuine WhatsApp group invite opens at chat.whatsapp.com and hands you straight to the WhatsApp app, where you see the group name, its photo and a Join button. Telegram invites open in Telegram, Discord invites open in Discord. If a link makes you stop in a browser page first, something is already off.
One thing before the list: a link that says it is invalid or expired is usually just a group whose admin reset it. That is annoying, not dangerous, and the usual reasons a WhatsApp group link stops working are mostly harmless.
The nine signs
Start with a habit that catches the first few by itself. Read the address from the first single slash backwards: whatever sits just before it is the real destination. A link that reads chat.whatsapp.com.something-else.net/abc is not WhatsApp, because the part that counts is the end of that domain, not the start. Scammers rely on you reading the beginning and stopping.
One sign alone is a reason to slow down. Two together are a reason to leave.
Copycats are worth a separate mention. A fake group can borrow the name and photo of a real brand, college or channel. If a group claims to be official, go to that organisation's own website or page and see which link it publishes, rather than trusting the one you were sent.
What a directory listing can and cannot tell you
Any directory, this one included, is built from links that people submitted. Submissions here are reviewed before they appear and dead ones get swept out, so a listing is better than a link pasted in a random comment thread. What no directory can see is what an admin does next. Admins rename groups, change their purpose, add new admins or hand the group to someone else, and a harmless study chat can turn into something else without the link changing at all.
So treat a listing as a place to start looking, never as a safety certificate, and apply the nine signs to every group no matter where you found it. That includes links a friend forwarded, since friends forward without checking too.
If you have already joined
Leave first, then block the numbers that wrote to you. In WhatsApp you can report a group from its info screen; the steps are in the WhatsApp Help Centre. Do not tap anything the group posted after you spotted the problem, and do not reply to the private messages, even to tell them off.
Tell whoever sent you the link. They were probably fooled as well, and an honest friend would rather know. If you want to warn others, describe the group in words or send a screenshot with the link cropped out, since forwarding the live link just recruits more people into it.
If you shared an OTP, bank details or Aadhaar or PAN information, call your bank's fraud line straight away and ask what can be frozen or changed. Delay is the one thing you cannot undo. Telegram has its own reporting tools, described in the Telegram FAQ.
If you only do one thing
Read the web address of the next group link before you tap it, all the way to the end. Then, when you want somewhere safer to look, browse the directory categories and choose groups with a narrow, boring purpose: a single exam, a single game, a single city. Those are hard to turn into a scam without the members noticing.
