The WhatsApp channel vs group choice comes down to who gets to talk. In a group, everyone can. In a channel, only the admins post, and followers can react but not reply. A community is a third thing: several groups gathered under one name, with an announcements feed on top.

WhatsApp channel vs group at a glance

The community cap is the shakiest row. WhatsApp does not document it clearly, and the older figures of 5,000 and 51,200 that still circulate look outdated. We go through the sources in our piece on group and community limits.

When a group is the right call

Pick a group when you want people talking to each other. Study circles, a building's residents, a hobby crowd, a team planning a trip.

It works while the group stays small enough that people know who is who. Once it grows large it tends to turn into a noticeboard that everyone has muted, which is a hint that you wanted a channel.

When a channel is the right call

A channel suits broadcast: exam notifications, deal alerts, a creator's updates, a local news feed. Followers cannot reply, which keeps the feed clean and also means nobody can ask the admin a question in it.

The privacy picture is different from a group. According to WhatsApp's announcement, followers' phone numbers are not shown to the admin or to other followers. The same post is plain that channels are not end-to-end encrypted by default, so treat a channel as public media and not as a private chat.

Posts are kept on WhatsApp's servers for up to 30 days, so something you scroll past this month may be gone from the channel next month. Save what matters.

Choosing which channels to follow is its own skill, and our guide to finding channels worth following covers it. You can also browse the WhatsApp channel links directory directly.

How each one feels day to day

In a group, every message lands in your normal chat list and competes with your family and friends. That is great while the conversation matters to you and tiring when it does not.

Channels live in the Updates tab, away from your chats. You open them when you feel like it, and a busy channel cannot bury a message from your mother. For news and deals that is a big advantage.

A community shows up as a single entry with the groups inside it, so you can ignore the groups you do not need and keep the announcements.

A simple test helps when you are unsure. Picture the best case: do you want people replying to each other, or do you want a large audience reading what you post? If the answer is replies, you want a group. If the answer is readers, a channel will serve you better, and you will not spend your evenings deleting spam.

For a reader the test is similar. If you want to ask a question and get an answer from strangers, join a group. If you only want the latest from a source, follow its channel and keep your chat list for people.

Switching later

As far as we know there is no button that turns a group into a channel or the other way round. If a group outgrows its purpose, the usual move is to start a channel, post its link in the group, and let people choose to follow.

Keep the group for the regulars who want to talk, and let the channel carry the announcements for everyone else. Many organisers end up running both.

Which one spreads further

Groups travel by invite link and are mostly found by word of mouth or on pages like ours. Channels can also be found through the directory inside WhatsApp, which WhatsApp expanded to more countries, so a new one can pick up followers from strangers with no link at all. If you want reach, a channel gives you more of it. If you want a tight circle, a group does.

Where communities and broadcast lists fit

According to WhatsApp's help centre a community links related groups together. It makes sense for an organiser: a school with a group per class, a society with a group per committee. Members get the shared announcements and can wander into the linked groups. For a normal member it adds one more layer to understand, and for most casual use it is more structure than anyone needs.

Broadcast lists are a separate feature that people often confuse with channels. A broadcast list sends your message to each person's private chat, and it only reaches those who have saved your number. Replies come back to you one by one. A channel has no such requirement, and strangers can find it in the directory.

Telegram draws the same line differently

If you use both apps, note that the split is not identical. Telegram's channels and groups have their own limits and rules, and we explain how they differ in our Telegram group versus channel comparison.

Where to start looking

Decide whether you want to talk or to follow, and go to the matching page. For conversation, the WhatsApp group links directory sorts groups by category. For updates, use the channel directory linked above. For the wider picture of how all these invite links work, start with our guide to group links.
