Learning how to join Telegram group with link takes one tap on the link and one on Join. The part worth your attention is what appears between those two taps, because that preview tells you whether the group is the one you were promised.

Short answerTap the t.me link in your browser or chat.Telegram opens and shows the group name and member count.Check that it matches what you were told, then press Join.If it says Request to Join, an admin has to approve you first.

Tap the link wherever you found it: a WhatsApp message, a web page, an Instagram bio. If Telegram is installed, your phone offers to open it there. If not, the page asks you to install the app first, and the link works once you have signed in.

The app then shows a preview card. It carries the group's name, picture and member count, and a Join button at the bottom. Tap it and you are in. On a laptop the steps are the same in Telegram Desktop and in the web version.

Some groups show Request to Join instead. The admin has turned on approval, so you wait until someone lets you in. That can take minutes or days, and some requests are never answered. Do not send the link again to the admin or the group. It does nothing.

A public link is short and readable, like t.me/name. Anyone can open it, and the group usually turns up in search as well. A private link has a random string after the slash, often starting with a plus sign. It does not appear in search, so the only way in is that exact link.

Admins control private links more than people expect. They can make a link expire, limit how many people may use it, or send everyone who uses it through approval. That is why a link that worked for your friend last week may refuse you today. Telegram's FAQ covers how public groups differ from private ones.

Check the preview before you tap Join

The preview is your only chance to catch a mismatch cheaply. Read the name carefully. Look at the member count and the line under it. Members means a group, subscribers means a channel, and you may have been sent to the wrong one. If the difference matters, the post on Telegram groups versus channels explains it.

If the group is public, scroll the chat before joining and see whether anybody has spoken lately. Judging whether a Telegram group is still alive goes through that in detail.

Be more careful with links that arrive unasked. A message promising guaranteed returns, free recharge or leaked papers, with a t.me link attached, is the usual shape of a trap. The signs a group link is not what it claims are worth reading before you join anything that reached you that way.

Most failures come down to a short list.

Still stuck after those? Ask in a place that is still alive, such as the channel or contact that shared it, for a fresh link. Do not paste invite links into strangers' private messages in the hope that someone will help. Telegram's spam FAQ says unsolicited invite links are exactly what gets accounts reported and limited.

After you press Join

Read the pinned message first. Most groups pin their rules there, and breaking them on day one is the quickest way to get removed. Mute the group until you know how noisy it is.

Keep in mind that other members can see your name and, if you have set one, your username. Do not post your phone number or personal details in a public group, however friendly the chat looks. Introduce yourself briefly if the rules ask for it, and otherwise read for a while before you write.

On a computer the steps are the same: click the link, let Telegram Desktop open (or use the web version), and click Join. Your account is shared across devices, so a group you join on the laptop appears on your phone straight away.

Where to start looking

If you have no link yet and just want a group to join, the Telegram groups directory lists public ones you can open straight from the page. For the bigger picture of how links, usernames and invites fit together, see how group links actually work.
